With reference to Lord Passfield's despatch No.317 of 15th October, 1930, regarding the compilation of a history of Hong Kong, I have the honour to inform you that, since the project was abandoned by Mr. H. G. Hughes, Reader in History, University of Hong Kong, this Government has kept in mind the desirability of a new history. Mr. W.L. Handyside of the Education Department, (acting Headmaster of King's College), has now signified his willingness to undertake the work and to devote his leave in England thereto, provided he is given an extension of four months' leave in 1936 and of two months' in 1940, for the purpose

of research.

Mr. Handy side contemplates a volume of about

150,000 words with sixteen or more half-tone illustrations, maps and a few line drawings, to cover the political, economic and general social background and development of the Colony since 1835, stress being laid on the peculiar difficulties and beneficial effects of British administration in this part of the

world.

3.

The estimated cost to Government, apart from any

honorarium to the author, is :-
